thespamasubi sent: Hello, I was wondering if there is anything I can do to my skin from getting it too shiny in the middle of the day. In the morning, I do my morning routine, but around lunch time, my t-zone and my chin gets really oily and shiny. Is there anyway I can do?

Hey there thespamasubi !

Great question! I have the same sort of problem, as well as millions of others. Oily skin, unlike popular belief, is not caused by greasy foods (unless you smear them all over your face, and that’s a whole different problem) but is primarily due to genetics. The other cause could be fluctuating  hormones if this problem happens every now and then.

There are TONS of products claiming to be the solution to your oily skin, to stop shine, blah blahblah blah. STOP.

anything containing  (Alpha Hydroxy Acids: glycolic acid, citric acid, lactic acid) or BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids: salicylic acid) will improve your oil production like a magic trick. IF used regularly.

AHAs are found in papayas  pineapples  apples, and lemons (careful with the lemon, it burns like a bitch if your skin is already irritated, so try mixing it with some cucumber juice) and dairy products.

BHAs are found in ASPIRIN. This tutorial shows you how to make your own aspirin toner.

BE GENTLE. CANT STRESS ENOUGH. Harsh exfoliation can cause your skin to flip out and dry out, so be gentle with that baby face.

After cleansing, use a WATER based moisturizer. This handmade one is full of awesome face food. Green tea helps cool your skin as well!

I hope this helps! The aspirin toner changed my life for sure.

Give these a try and let us know how it worked for you!

Love,

Kels

Anonymous sent: what do you think of ulta make up or victoria secret?

Well…
Victoria’s Secret (A Limited Brands company, along with Bath and Body Works) have been caught in a mirad of illegal sweatshop cases and have a lot of labor ethics issues that, quite frankly, are disgusting.

Ulta is a more “high quality” brand that is pretty popular (and crazy expensive if you ask me)

But BOTH of these companies have toxic chemicals in their products that wreak havoc on your skin, cause premature aging, and are KNOWN to (not thought to) cause cancer.

Phthalates area plasticizer that is linked to cancer, infertility, and birth defects. Lead, its effects similar to the phthalates, can be found in lipsticks and other cosmetics. There are also parabens, that are linked to breast cancer. These along with thousands of other toxins are absorbed by our bodies every time we lather up, put on perfume, and do our makeup.

My suggestion to you, and everyone, is to look into making your own healthy, toxin-free (and better looking!) makeup. There are several tutorials on youtube, and on hundreds of websites.

In Texas, spring is officially here and my skin has been hiding all winter and probably shouldn’t be seen in public. So, I thought I’d give it a go on making my own salt scrub and bringing my skin back to life.
Tea Tree Salt Scrub
2 Cups Sea Salt
1/2 Cup Grapefruit Oil
10 drops of Tea Tree Oil
Mix together in a bowl until all ingredients are combined. Makes about three 8oz jars.

Ginger Sugar Scrub for Face and Body
1/4 cup coconut oil 1 tablespoon ginger, coarsely chopped 1/4 cup cold-pressed oil (tea seed, grape seed, sunflower, or almond oil) 3/4 cup granulated or turbinado sugar 1/4 cup kosher salt 1-4 drops essential oil (I used lemongrass)
In a small saucepan over low heat heat the coconut oil and ginger pieces. Continue heating for 5-10 minutes until ginger scent and juice has transferred into the oil. Remove from heat and press through a fine mesh sieve or through a coffee filter.
While the oil is still warm, mix together with cold-pressed oil. Stir to combine and allow to come to room temperature. Stir in sugar and salt. Scent with essential oils as desired. Pack into a container.
To Use: Massage into damp skin and allow to sit 2-4 minutes. Using a washcloth covered in warm water, steam over face or stand in a steamy shower for a minute. Using the wet washcloth, wipe excess from skin. Rinse and repeat until oil is washed away.
Makes approximately 8 ounces sugar body scrub.

D.I.Y Skincare from Your Kitchen

powderdoom:

Masks, scrubs — they can add up to a lot of money. If you don’t want to fork over the cash it’s ok, you can still use these products you most likely have around your house.

  • Sugar - Unrefined sugar is the best imo. Add olive oil and you have a face scrub and/or lip scrub.
  • Yogurt - Plain vanilla yogurt! So moisturizing and wonderful for dry, dehydrated skin. You can mix this with lemon juice, aspirin, avocado, etc for great mask for acne prone, dry, sensitive skin.
  • Lemon Juice - Like I said above, you can mix it with yogurt, or you can also whiten your yellow nails by soaking them in some lemon juice for a few minutes. It also fades acne scars and can be used as a toner.
  • Olive Oil - can be used as makeup remover, as moisturizer, or a hair mask.
  • Avocado - mash it up and make a conditioner, moisturizer, or face mask.
  • Coconut Oil - good for your hair and face. Basically bathe yourself in it.
  • Aspirin - I know this isn’t really in your kitchen, but you probably have it around. Make sure it’s uncoated aspiring. If you mix a few tablets with a drop or two of water, it makes a great acne treatment.
  • Rosewater -a really good, non-drying toner.
  • Oatmeal - makes for a great face mask.
  • Baking Soda - for whitening teeth.
  • Egg Whites rub ‘em on and let ‘em dry, they’ll firm your skin up and minimize your pores.

What have I missed? Leave an ask or reply/reblog and we can make this list even more expansive!
